They have stepped up efforts to sort and pack abalone seedlings, which are then cultivated at farms out at sea. The region accounts for about a third of the country’s abalone output, shipping more than 53,500 tonnes of the prized seafood last year. UC Davis Aquaculture wanted to learn about the ocean farming of red abalone aquaculture in cage culture. We visited with Monterey Abalone, in Monterey California and watched how abalone are grown in cage culture submerged in an ocean aquaculture farm also called mariculture. This sustainable aquaculture farm consists of hundreds of abalone cages suspending below wharf in Monterey California. Each week these giant sea snails are brought up to the surface and fed giant bladder kelp and immediately returned to the ocean. Subsistence aquaculture or food aquaculture is specifically focused on producing seafood for consumption. Monterey Abalone is not just involved in marine aquaculture for seafood but also supports the conservation aquaculture of abalone. Ocean farming of abalone is another examples of low trophic aquaculture for California. #aquaculture, #abalone, #ocean, #farming, #cage, #mariculture, #Kelp, #Conservation, #California montereyabalone.com aquaculture..ucdavis.edu

The 5th China International Import Expo (CIIE) will be held in Shanghai from November 5 to 10. South Africa has participated in the CIIE for four consecutive years, promoting beef, wine, tea, abalone and other high-quality agricultural products. This year, abalone products, including dried and canned abalone, will be showcased in the exhibition area. For a closer look at the country's seafood, CGTN's Julie Scheier visits an abalone farm in Hermanus on South Africa's southwestern coast to explore this popular specialty. #CIIE2022
Abalone are one of the most luxurious and expensive seafood products around the world, with high demand specifically in the Asian countries because of the cultural, traditional, and medicinal qualities associated with abalone. Abalone aquaculture over the last decade has increased its share of the world abalone market with the decline of abalone fisheries. Abalone culture technology is now well established in several countries, and the industry is now in its maturation phase. The total volume of worldwide abalone fisheries has declined since the 1970’s, but farm production has increased from negligible quantities in the 1970s to more than 100,000 tons, the vast majority being produced in China and South Korea. Other relevant abalone producing countries are South Africa, Chile, Australia, USA and Mexico. Roberto Flores-Aguilar is an oceanographer from the Marine Science Faculty at Baja California Autonomous University (UABC). He is a pioneer of abalone and marine fish farming in Mexico. He has been a researcher, academic, entrepreneur and public official in the field of aquaculture and was recognized by the World Aquaculture Society through the Innovation in Aquaculture award. He was co-founder of the first commercial abalone farming project at the company Abalone Cultivados and serves as the Technical Director. Roberto is a past president of the International Abalone Society, which brings together professionals in the sector from around the world. He also co-founded and directed the production of the Yellowtail Seriola dorsalis at Baja Seas grow out farm and Ocean Baja Labs that produces Yellowtail juveniles. He was also Director of Fisheries in the State of Baja California and has worked and consulted with various academic and production companies in Chile

Abalone, commonly known as "perlemoen", is a critically endangered species. Since the early 2000s, thousands of tonnes of abalone have been poached from South Africa’s coast. It is a highly valued delicacy in China, which primarily imports abalone from South Africa. The Doringbay Abalone Farm started in 2013 and is partly community-owned. The farm started with just eight employees, now employs over 50 community members, and produces 60 tonnes of abalone each year. 📝 Produced by Liezl Human 🎥 Video & Editing by Ashraf Hendricks About GroundUp News: GroundUp is a South African-based news agency that publishes news that matters. Poachers are feeding the country’s appetite for the pricy little mollusk resulting in a drop in the abalone population in South Africa's once-large natural reserves.
