Amanda lives alone in an off-grid cabin on a remote island in British Columbia. She previously lived on a sailboat in Vancouver for 8 years and then headed North with her boat. She eventually wanted to move onto land because her dog Buttercup was getting older and after searching online, she connected with the owners of an island who were looking for a caretaker to keep an eye on things. So for the past two years, Amanda has lived solo on the island (aside from a couple of months in the summer when the owners and cabin guests are visiting) and she has taken care of everything from splitting and stacking firewood, maintaining the lawn, running the generators, and a lot more! It's a big job and she does most of her caretaker tasks in the morning and in the afternoons she works remotely as a web designer. She also has a great YouTube channel that she uses to document her liveaboard and off-grid lifestyles. You can follow and find out more about Amanda's off-grid island life here: 🤍 🤍 🤍 A huge thank you to Amanda, Lukáš, and the island owners for making this video happen!! Stephanie and Joel share their 14-year journey of building a home from reclaimed materials, living off-grid with solar power, and growing a lot of their own food, from fruits and veggies to milk, meat, and honey. They built their home on shared land using materials they salvaged from the dump, wood from a building they took apart themselves, and whatever free stuff they could get their hands on. They had no electricity in the beginning so they only had candles. Eventually, they got a solar panel and a battery to run lights, and the systems have evolved from there. They now have a wood cookstove for heat and cooking in the winter, 5 solar panels and 4 lithium batteries for electricity (plus a generator to supplement on cloudy days), a washing machine, a propane fridge and stove for summertime cooking, and a thermostat controlled propane stove so they don't have to get up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire. For water they have a quarry on the land which they draw from to fill a reservoir in their loft. From there, the water is gravity fed into the kitchen and bathroom. Their drinking water comes from a well on the property. The toilet is an Airhead urine diverting toilet. The cabin has a master bedroom in the loft and a main-floor bedroom that's split into two sleeping spaces for their kids. They have an open-concept kitchen, dining and living room area, and the bathroom is closed in with a beautiful bottle wall. There's also a sunroom they recently added to the front of the house to bring in natural light, passive solar heating, and to grow food in the winter (with the help of LED grow lights). For work, Joel owns a tree service business, and Stephanie runs an off-grid Airbnb business. If you're a fan of shipping container homes, then this is a video tour you won't want to miss! In this weeks episode we meet Rosie, who has constructed an incredible off-the-grid home out of five 20ft shipping containers. Rosie's home is situated in the middle of a spectacular conservation block and her beautiful modern shipping container home has been wonderfully designed to take full advantage of the beautiful surrounding landscape. Best of all, this home is completely off the grid, with solar power, rainwater collection and even a vermi-composting toilet, meaning she will never need to see another power or water bill again. We take a look at the top ten sustainable, off-grid homes from around the world, assessing the design and build of each structure, and learning how we can all be more resourceful, and reduce our impact on the planet. Although living off-grid can be challenging and requires an environmental learning curve, it can have numerous positive benefits like conserving energy, reducing living costs, and helping people feel more connected to nature. Which is your favourite off-grid home? Learn more about the Nick Maughan Foundation- 🤍 See more on Instagram- 🤍 Join the Going Green Facebook Page- 🤍 REFERENCES: Ruin Studio - Scotland Using the foundations and ruined stonework of an old farmhouse, the house builds upon the architecture already in place with a pitched black rubber roof. Relying on solar power and with the water coming through pipework from a local farm, the building was built to neat passivhaus standards. 🤍 Bruny Island Cabin - Tasmania Off the Southeastern coast of Tasmania, the architects designed the building as if it were a “piece of furniture”, blending minimalist design with the wooden furniture of the building. 🤍 Floating Home - Canada Situated on a lake, and built as a studio for an artist. The home has been continually extended and improved, using nearly all second hand materials, except for ceiling joists. The home uses solar energy to power two 6v batteries, as well using propane for the stove, and filtering its own rain water supply. 🤍 Summit Prairie - Oregon, USA Built in 2009 and designed to look like an observation tower from the US Forest Service. Has 360 degree views of the surrounding Umpqua national forest, the building also features an outdoor shower and wood-fired spring fed hot tub. 🤍 🤍 Dusky Parakeet Houseboat - London Built as a fully movable houseboat, the boat is fully off-grid, with a 500 litre water tank, solar panels and a gas-incinerating toilet. The doors and work surfaces of the boat are made from recycled yoghurt pots, yet resemble marble worktops. With hidden storage around the boat it benefits from living and kitchen space, as well as the bedroom and shower room. 🤍 The Stamp House - Australia Located in North Queensland, the architecture of the building is designed to be able to withstand a category 5 hurricane, so the building doubles as a home and hurricane shelter. Drawing power from both a rooftop solar array as well as a backup solar generator, the building also hosts a water harvesting system that can draw up to 250,000 litres of water for home use or for irrigation. 🤍 Mountain Home - California Built by a professional snowboarder in the mountains near Truckee, California. The home is built to the golden ratio and is pentagonal shaped, made from local rock and wood. The running water comes from a nearby creek that runs through the property, and the home is heated by a wood-burning stove. 🤍 House of the Big Arch - South Africa Built within a nature reserve in the Waterberg mountains, the home is designed to blend in with the natural landscape, and was 3D planned to make sure that it could fit between the trees that already sat on the location, so as not to harm them. 🤍 Woodman’s Cabin - Scotland Located in the Cairngorms National Park this wooden cabin is made from 260 year-old Scots Pine, recycled from the location they fell. Featuring rain water collecting barrels, as well as a bush shower, the only modern features the cabin has are solar panels powering two electric lights. With a composting toilet as well as gas powered stove, there is no fridge, only a cooler box located in a nearby stream. 🤍 Earthship Ironbank - Australia This unique building sits about 40 minutes from Adelaide, Australia, and is an ongoing project in sustainability, studying the efficiency of energy and water, and how they work within our climate. 🤍 Some of the clips used in the video belong to the respective owners mentioned in the references above. Escape the Grid: Best States for Off-Grid Living So, ya wanna live off the grid? You have grown tired of being suffocated by the rat race and want to make your own way and live more deliberately. Why not, it worked for Henry David Thoreau. There are several ways you can live off the grid. Van life, off-grid tiny homes, cabins, you can even live out of a rucksack or backpack. However you do it, it is becoming more popular. Gen-Xers down were always told to go to school, get a job, buy a house, start a family, and start getting ready to die. Younger generations and some of the older generations aren’t down with that. They are blazing their own trails. One of those trails ends up living off the grid. If you are one of those people that are thinking about this, today I am going to list the best states to live off the grid. Charlie built this beautiful off-grid float home in a remote channel on the west coast and has been living on it full-time for the past 25 years. His wife, Ellen, is a newbie to the lifestyle and joined him there 6 years ago. Together they have lived a quiet life in tune with the weather and the seasons. In this video, we get a peek at their beautiful home and some insight into the systems, the work, and the challenges that come with living this way. The couple relies on solar power for electricity (supplementing with a generator on grey days), they have a wood stove for heat, propane for cooking and laundry, and a composting toilet for their waste. There is a floating greenhouse and some raised garden beds on the deck that provide approx. 50% of their fresh vegetables in the summer. The rest of their food is bought at the grocery store in bulk so that they can stay out for 6 weeks or longer at a time. Their home is quite remote and it's water access only, so have a couple of open boats, and one enclosed boat for travelling in rough or cold weather. The couple says they sometimes have to wait more than a week for a weather window to make a safe trip away from the cabin. In this video, we get a peek at their beautiful home and some insight into the systems, the work, and the challenges involved in living this way. "Charlie and Ellen acknowledge and express our gratitude to all those people and businesses who are on the grid and provide supplies and services that help us maintain our ability to live out where we do, off-grid and in the wilderness. We are so fortunate to be where we are and we know we couldn’t do it without their support.” A very special thank you to Charlie and Ellen for sharing their story with us, and to Lukáš for making the trip all the way out there to film them. This family of 5 has worked hard over the past 13 years to make their off-grid homestead dreams a reality. Their yurt home is connected to a straw bale kitchen and garage, they collect rainwater and solar power, and they heat with an indoor wood boiler that provides in-floor heating. Their homestead includes sprawling gardens that produce a ton of vegetables, and they also raise pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, quail, rabbits and bees for everything from meat and eggs to feta cheese and honey. In this video, Becca and Jean share a tour of their alternative home, explain their off-grid systems, talk about the financial and permitting hoops they had to jump through, and share the ups and downs of living this lifestyle. In this video, I meet with Al (82 years of age) one year after helping him rebuild/refurbish his hydroelectric water wheel. We discuss how the wheel has been performing since, and some of the issues he's faced with it, as well as solutions and plans going forward. Al then gives me a more in-depth view of how he has managed to live on his property in rural Washington state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States for 46 years. A combination of solar power, his water wheel, and a backup generator provide him with off grid power. While a natural spring provides gravity fed drinking water to his main house, as well as his many unique and custom built out-buildings (including a sauna cabin). Al and I conclude our visit by hiking to the highest point on his 40 acre parcel of land to catch a view of Mt St Helens and reminisce about the 1980 eruption. In an effort to return to a more simple way of living, with reduced overheads and more time together in nature, this adventurous family gave up their city apartment, built a beautiful off-the-grid tiny house and moved to the remote Australian wilderness where they could live free and wild. Situated in a hard to access corner of a large working farm and with a spectacular wilderness backdrop, this DIY, off-the-grid tiny home is a sight to behold. Inside, the home is well designed, with clever storage features and the ability to comfortably meet the young family's needs. This is a home designed around nature and access to the land, so to compliment the tiny house a huge awning has been erected providing great outdoor living space. Steve and Di have constructed a fantastic home for their family to re-wild. Live off the grid, with modern luxury!
Bryce and Misty have spent the last 12 years building a cob home, homesteading, living off the grid, and homeschooling their two daughters. They live without a car, so for transportation, they use taxis and bicycles, and they eventually hope to have a cart that their two horses can pull. For food production, they have a permaculture food forest for fruits and vegetables, chinampa-inspired wetland gardens, a cow and a bull for milk, ducks and chickens for eggs, bees for honey, and they also forage and cultivate feral crops. You can find out more about Bryce and Misty here: YouTube: 🤍 Blog: 🤍 Email: ontariopermaculture🤍hotmail.com And SUPPORT BRYCE AND MISTY here: 🤍 🤍 These two have put in an impressive amount of work setting up their homestead. The house is built with clay that they collected from the wetland area of their property, their well was dug by hand, and everything from the fences to the staircase was made with wood from within a 20km radius of their home. The cost to build the house was approximately $1,000 CAD. Most of the building materials (the sand, clay, straw, and wood) came from the land, and things like roofing, lumber, and windows they sourced from secondhand and reclaimed sources. Interestingly, they used several different natural building techniques in the home with each new addition. They usually start with a timber frame, and they have used cob, straw bales and wattle and daub, to fill in the spaces between the beams. And they've also explored using green roofs and earth floors. Since moving to the land, they had two lovely daughters that they homeschool using unschooling and life immersion methods. They learn about food production, natural building, nature, math, reading, and more! To earn an income, they do a variety of odd jobs including catering, seasonal farm work, a roadside plant stand, and they also receive the childcare benefit that all families in their province receive. Their primary focus is not how to earn more money but rather how to spend less and have more time. They try to produce as much of what they need on the farm. For electricity, they have solar panels on the roof and a wind turbine (currently non-operational), for water they have a hand-dug well and rainwater collection barrels, for heat they have wood stoves, they have two composting toilets, and a rocket stove to heat water for their bathtub. How did we get here? In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. Our family has been LIVING OFF GRID in the UK for OVER FIVE YEARS. In this video we share WHY we chose to go off grid, and what living off grid was like for us in the early days. As part of our off grid life we: Have a DIY off grid solar power system which produces the vast majority of our electricity. (We have a back up generator for those grey weeks!) Collect and filter rain water. Grow an increasing amount of our food in a polytunnel which we built earlier this year. If you would like to follow us on our journey please consider subscribing. I certainly didn't expect to find people when I came out into the mountains so remote, but what a blessing it is. As a solo remote traveler, it is hard to find likeminded people, especially in social environments. Finding Bill and Jan was a blessing in disguise, not only because of the company but because they truly made my experience in the area complete. They played a big roll in recommending me how to prepare for the trips I planned, they fed me and taught me all about the area, and we even got to do some awesome exploring together in the area. I have been living off grid for the past three years, and I have learned so much and begun to appreciate so much of what it takes to survive in the world, but mine is at scale that is so manageable. To build a homestead in the middle of nowhere, with the luxuries of a home within "civilization" is another level, and it was so neat to learn and share with them. It is also a tremendous honour to be able to share it with all of you. I love to explore, and I love the lifestyle that comes with it, but stories like this is why I love this channel. Getting to saw my way into the middle of nowhere, find folks that are so genuine and pure, and get to share time with them and share their story with you all - that is a travel experience I wouldn't trade the world for. This location is really not that far from my home town, and I often discount these experiences because of that. I realized during this trip in the Chilcotin, especially after meeting Bill and Jann, that these may be some of the most precious travel experiences one could ask for. Anyways, I am sure you can see how excited and proud I am to present this experience and video to you all, so I truly hope you enjoy it. It's been 1 year since we left the city to live off grid. Having moved to the wilderness of Tennessee with ZERO experience to develop our raw land into our forever Homestead. On our road to becoming Self Sufficient we learned from day 1 how our lives were about to change for the better but not without the hardships that come with building a homestead from scratch. Using Solar for our electric and rainwater harvesting for all of our water needs has made our daily routine living in the woods a challenge but rewarding. We attempted to grow our own food with our first ever organic garden, built multiple rainwater collection systems and learned to live without the amenities we were so used to while living in Los Angeles. Moving our lives towards a minimalist lifestyle has taught both Jes and I how to appreciate everything we work for and the journey of learning will lead us all the way to building our own cob cottage. Although our Bushcraft skills are at a minimum we keep pushing forward and with every failure we learn a better way of how to homestead. Living off the land is not something we ever thought was possible in today's society but with determination to escape the rat race, we inch our way to a happier, healthier existence not only in harmony with our own bodies but in oneness with nature all around us. Follow our off grid vlog Little House Off The Griddy and lend us your experience or learn from what we do right or wrong. Another full year in the wilderness living my dream. There is no place I would rather be than in the wilderness, self reliant, thriving in an off grid log cabin and living close to nature. Spring arrived today, and in my mind, it's the beginning of a new year and I reflect on the last 365 days spent building my homestead and creating a safe place for my family and me for times like this. The next 365 days will bring big changes for me and my family as we continue to learn how to and practice becoming more self reliant and put the lessons I have learned over the last three years to use. This year, food security and health are our focus, along with a few building projects that I'll be undertaking alone to make our homestead more self sufficient. Stay healthy and be kind. Canadian Castaway has been living off-grid in his self-built cabin for 6 years now, and we sat down with him to find out what it's like day-to-day, how much it cost him to build and live off the grid, and what he's changed over the years to make his alternative lifestyle more comfortable and functional. You can follow Canadian Castaway on YouTube and Instagram here: 🤍 🤍 He also has plans of his cabin for sale here: 🤍 Canadian Castaway lives in an 18' x 22' cabin with his girlfriend and his cat. It has a kitchen, living room, and bathroom on the main floor, and a movie-watching space, a home office, and a bedroom in a couple of lofts above. His electricity is from two solar arrays that are set up in different spots on his land to maximize sun exposure, and the panels charge a pair of lithium batteries. He also has a generator for backup electricity, which he runs for about an hour a day during grey winter days to top up his batteries. His heat comes from a wood stove and his hot water and cooktop run on propane, although he has installed an electric water heater for use on sunny days (when there's extra solar power) so that he can reduce the amount of propane he uses. He collects rainwater from the roof of the small house, and stores it in a 6,000-liter cistern in a shed. During summer months when there is plenty of rain, the tank is always full. During the winter, he goes for about 5 months without rain, so he has to ration the water (about 1000 liters per month). The tap water is filtered through a nylon filter to remove sediment, and the drinking water goes through a UV lamp filtration system. He initially bought the land and built the cabin for approx. $64,000 CAD but that was done by taking a risk and building without a building permit. The building inspector has since required some upgrades that significantly increased the cost of the project, including putting in a road, putting in an engineered septic system, increasing the size of his cabin's footprint to meet the minimum building code size, etc. He initially wanted to build and live off-grid because it seemed cheaper, and with the cost of land being so low, the entire project cost less than what an empty lot costs now. But he does say that while he enjoys the feeling of being self-sufficient, it's also very limiting because you can't leave the home unattended. He might eventually plug into the grid if the power lines get closer to the point where it would be affordable to do so.
