🔸 🤍 One of the most frequent questions that we get asked is “how do I anchor my solar system?”. In this video, we’ll go through some of the most common methods of anchoring a SolarSet system and help you understand what method is best for you. Thus anchor system is applicable for all SOLARSET Models (🤍 including the Rigid Series (🤍 and FOLD Series (🤍 Like any solar system, a solar array catches a lot of wind, and must be securely anchored to the ground in order to prevent it from tipping over or lifting up. All of the methods we’ll go over here can be rated for wind loads of 100 miles per hour, or more if needed. If your county has special wind load requirements, wind ratings of 140 miles per hour can be attained with some of these anchoring methods. There are 5 different standard ways of anchoring a SolarSet system. ◾ Option 1 – Mounting the system on a concrete curb ◾ Option 2 – Using dirt or gravel to fill a large tray mounted in the SolarSet frame ◾ Option 3 – Using helical earth anchors screwed into the ground ◾ Option 4 – Using pre-formed concrete blocks ◾ Option 5 – Using steel trays that can be filled with concrete 🔹 Option 1. Mounting the system to a concrete curb. While this looks the best and is the most stable when it is done, it is sometimes cost prohibitive since it is required to be built with standard, concrete construction practices and usually requires a concrete contractor to perform the work. The rear rail sits on a 24” deep x 24” wide concrete curb, and the front rail sits on a smaller curb, in this case 24” wide and 6” deep. Once the concrete is cured, the solar system is anchored down using standard concrete anchor bolts. But let’s look at some other, more economical options for anchoring your SolarSet. 🔹 Option 2 uses dirt or gravel to weigh the system down. This method is the preferred anchoring method for SolarSet, because it is easy to install and has no ground penetrations like some of the other options. To install this system, galvanized metal bridge decking is installed between the bottom beams against the ground. End caps are installed on the ends of the SolarSet frame. These components create a large tray that gravel can be piled into. In order to have an adequate wind rating using this method, the dirt that is piled into the tray must be 80 pounds per cubic foot or more. Most soil types meet this requirement. 🔹 Option 3. Earth anchors are often used to anchor mobile homes, campers, billboards, and other things prone to high wind loads. They are another preferred anchoring method for SolarSet, if the ground type is right. Different types of anchors can be used for different types of soils, but in general, earth anchors don’t work if there are rocks present, or if the soil is too loose. Driving a 3 ft. or 4 ft. stake into the ground is a good, basic test to help determine if earth anchors are a good fit for your location. Before the earth anchor method is used to anchor the solar system, a Pull Test needs to be done on an anchor in order to determine the size, type and quantity of anchors needed. The pull test should be performed at the site where the solar system will be placed. When anchors are used in suitable locations, they are one of the cleanest solutions, and allow for the system to be easily moved to a different location in the future. 🔹 Option 4 uses pre-formed concrete blocks stacked on the back rail of the solar system. Although there is a wide range of sizes these preformed blocks come in, almost any concrete ready-mix will have them available to purchase at low cost. The blocks need to be able to fit in-between the a frames of the solar framework, and be a minimum of 3,100 pounds (depending on wind load requirements). Steel brackets must be installed in order to keep the blocks centered and supported on the rear beam. Although this is not the best-looking solution, it is one of the most economical if anchors are not an option, and offers a good solution for temporary applications. 🔹 Option 5 uses pre-fabricated steel trays. They are meant to be moved around easily by hand, then filled with concrete once set into place. There is no need for rebar, and no need to hire a concrete contractor. Just fill them with concrete and level it off. There are several different sizes and styles of these prefabricated concrete trays to be used for different applications. They are built with hooks in the top, so these trays are another great option if the system might be moved sometime in the future. So what anchoring method works best for you?
