GFCI Outlet: 🤍 Favorite Smart Home Devices: 🤍 Outdoor GFCI Outlet Cover Vertical: 🤍 Outdoor GFI Outlet Cover Horizontal: 🤍 Plastic Universal Cover: 🤍 In this video we cover the difference between a GFI and GFCI. They are actually the same thing it's just different terminology for the same device. GFI stands for ground fault interrupter and GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. GFI = GFCI it's just that people have shortened down the acronym over time. A GFI and GFCI is designed to protect your from electrical hazards caused by ground faults. When a ground fault is detected the GFI or GFCI shuts of the power to the device you have plugged in to prevent a continuous electrical current from running through the device. Typically GFI's and GFCI's are found in wet locations or areas where electrical devices may be exposed to water. In many areas GFI's are required for outlets installed within 6ft of a water source. In this video, This Old House master electrician Heath Eastman teaches host Kevin O'Connor everything he needs to know about ground fault circuit interrupters. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: 🤍 Kevin O'Connor and master electrician Heath Eastman meet back at the shop to talk about GFCI outlets. After discussing what a GFCI is and what it does, Heath shows Kevin how it works, the different types of installations that may exist, and how to test a GFCI’s function. What are GFCIs? GCFIs exist to protect the user. These devices detect when current from the hot conductor contacts a non-current-carrying metal part and cut off power to the circuit. This means that GFCIs detect when current escapes the circuit due to a short circuit, such as the wire touching a metal box, a plumbing pipe, or the user standing in a puddle of water when plugging something in. Rather than continuing to feed current into that object or person, the GFCI trips and prevent further flow of electricity. Where They're Required GFCIs are not new. They've been around since the 1960s, and as such, code requires them in certain places. Typically required spaces include kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor outlets. Anywhere water is usually present from a sink, shower, or toilet, or environmental causes like rain, snow, and dew, are locations where GFCIs are typically required. How They Work GFCIs operate by sensing the amount of current is being used by a device. The device looks for the same amount of current coming into the device and back out of the device. If the amount of current drops on the return side of the device, the GCFI will sense an imbalance (typically caused by a short of some sort) and trip the outlet off. Types of GFCI Devices There are typically two types of GFCI devices: outlets and breakers. GFCI outlets generally have a test and reset switch on their fronts, which is the tell-tale sign that a GFCI protects the circuit. Should the device trip, the reset button will jump outward, and the user must then reset it to reactivate the circuit beyond the outlet. Breakers work similarly, though they install inside the main electrical panel and protect the entire circuit. GFCI Circuits Just because an outlet doesn't have a test and reset button on its front doesn't mean it's not GFCI-protected. These devices are designed to shut off the entire circuit past the GFCI outlet, so if an outlet is on a GFCI-protected circuit, a short will cause the GFCI to trip regardless of where the short occurs. So, if a GFCI is installed first in a series of 5 outlets, a short at the 5th outlet will cause the GFCI to trip, protecting the entire circuit. If you've ever wondered what any of these do or where you should use them, this is going to completely change how you look at electrical safety. There are different options available when it comes to AFCI and GFCI protection. For example, they can protect a single outlet (receptacle) or an entire circuit (breaker) depending on what your needs are. The best way to protect against any arc fault (parallel arc, series arc, and ground arc) is by using a Dual-Function CAFCI/GFCI breaker. Join this channel to get access to perks: 🤍 GFCI protection has been around for quite some time now. But, as the NEC is ever evolving and changing as situations dictate, its worth revisiting to explain where they are required. In the latest episode of Electrician U, Dustin talks about where we need to be installing GFCI protection in a residential application. 🤘⚡️MEMBERSHIP⚡️🤘 JOIN ELECTRICIAN U - become a member and get: FREE Continuing Education every year FREE Practice Exams FREE Monthly Video Courses FREE Weekly Live Instructor-Led Classes FREE Monthly Educational Newsletter Premium Members-Only Content Private Discord Channel Monthly Members-Only Discord Chats Sign up here - 🤍 🎧🎹MUSIC AND VIDEO:🎹🎧 🤍 🎬✍️ART AND ILLUSTRATION:✍️🎬 🤍 Every 3 years, the NEC comes out with a new edition to follow. This is done to allow the installation/utilization of new equipment, materials, and installation methods. Every code change tends to be reasonably extensive, and the 2023 National Electrical Code changes are no different! Always make sure you are installing your electrical work per the newest version of the NEC (2023 NEC being the most current!). Before we get started into what the code says regarding GFCI, lets explain what a GFCI device is. A GFCI receptacle senses the imbalance between what is going out and what is coming back on an electrical circuit. Any difference means that something has gone where it shouldn’t and poses a danger to personnel. If that imbalance is within a few milliamps, then the breaker (or receptacle) trips and cuts off any source of power and protects the people working on our using the circuit. GFCI are required to be installed generally in most places where exposure to water can exacerbate the problems of using an electrical outlet. Having said that, GFCI protection is usually limited to non-lighting circuits, as lighting circuitry is generally overhead and the potential for you having to be standing in a puddle of water while actually working on a light fixture is considerably lessened. Article 210.8 of the NEC is where we can find requirements for GFCI protection and we will be speaking mostly from a residential standpoint today (article 210.8 B, C, D, E expand on GFCI protection in other than dwelling units. Article 210.8 (A) says ALL 125-250v receptacles installed in the following locations shall be GFCI protected: 1. Bathrooms 2. Garages and accessory buildings tha have a floor located at or below grade level not intended as habitable rooms 3. Outdoors 4. Crawl spaces- at or below grade level 5. Basements 6. Kitchens 7. Areas with sinks and permanent provisions for food prep, beverage prep, or cooking 8. Boathouses 9. Bathtubs or shower stalls- where receptacles are installed within 6 ft of the outside edge of the bathtub or shower stall 10. Laundry areas 11. Indoor damp and wet locations So, we can see that the requirements (for a DWELLING UNIT) require GFCI protection really anywhere where there is ready access to water sources or where water could possibly be near any electrical outlet. There are a few exceptions listed, one of which being a receptacle supplying power to a security system as the possibility of nuisance tripping of the circuit could cause further problems. Also worth of note here, is the requirement that ALL of the receptacles in a kitchen now be GFCI protected. In recent years, the requirement was only for receptacles serving the countertops as well as those within 6 ft of a sink, the new 2023 NEC now requires ALL receptacles in kitchens to be GFCI protected (much like kitchens in other than dwelling units). We hope this has been an insightful look into GFCI protection in a dwelling unit. Is there a topic you would like to see discussed here on Electrician U? This short video demonstrates a GFCI Outlet Installation. GFCI outlets or receptacles are very simple to install with some basic hand tools. They are very similar to a standard outlet or receptacle when it come to installation with exception of a few simple differences explained in this video. These outlets are required by code within six feet of a water source such as in kitchens and bathrooms but also in other wet or potentially wet locations such as basements, garages or exterior outlets. These outlets are designed to trip when they detect a current delta between hot and neutral of 5mA or higher. Be sure to disconnect power by opening a circuit breaker or pulling the fuse before working on any electrical circuits. Also verify power has been disconnected with a meter or other approved method.

RFI Trips GFCI Breakers

I was working in a customer's equipment room when I needed to call my coworker on the radio. I keyed up and quickly heard a handful of breakers trip. Closer inspection confirmed that every GFCI breaker in the panel had tripped. We were using a couple of Baofeng UV-82s operating on GMRS frequencies at the time. 70cm frequencies seemed to trip the breakers at up to 8 feet away (as far away as I could get within the room), while 2m frequencies would trip the breakers individually when within about a foot.

THINK THATS SHOCKING? "Watch & Learn" ™👀 🐦🐤BIRDS NEST in ELECTRIC BREAKER Panel⚡🔥 🤍 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: G.F.C.I. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter #receptacle plugs Suggestion: Most homeowners do not test their GFCI receptacle plugs, as they should monthly to prevent a shock hazard. The manufacturers on their packaging recommend it. GFCI receptacle plugs are known to stick on the internal components if not tested periodically. Definition: Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. A GFCI receptacle plug will have two buttons on the front of it with the words “test” and “reset” and it continuously monitors the circuit for any voltage leaks that may cause a shock hazard near water. In the event of this, it should shut off the receptacle plug or circuit that it is protecting. Testing GFCI plugs: • Simply press the "TEST" button on the GFCI receptacle plug while using a receptacle plug polarity tester plugged into the outlet or any general appliance such as a radio. • You should hear a “snap” noise as the device interrupts the circuit and the "RESET" button should pop out. • The appliance or receptacle tester lights should shut off. • If none of these things occur, than there is a default with the GFCI receptacle plug or it is not wired properly and it should be repaired or replaced immediately. • When finished testing simply push the “RESET” button to put the receptacle plug back in working operation. Caution: GFCI receptacle plugs can control other receptacle plugs throughout the home. So, if you ever experience a regular receptacle plug that is not in operation, it may be controlled by a #gfci . #housetips #household © Copyright 2009 - 2023 John A. Frejeris

You can purchase GFCI only breakers if you want, but in my opinion you might as well go with the dual function for the added AFCI protection. If an outlet is going to be placed outdoors it needs to be weather resistant (WR) and tamper resistant (TR). Indoors almost all receptacles are required to be TR but not WR. This is the process of converting from a GFCI receptacle and standard breaker to using a standard outlet or receptacle that is protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter breaker. I prefer this method as the GFCI breaker is more likely to last especially in applications like this one where the receptacle is in an outdoor location. It also allows for a cleaner look in kitchen or bathroom applications. One potential negative is that you have to access the panel in order to reset the breaker if it trips versus just resetting it on the face of the receptacle. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
