This video is about the Finnish volunteers for the Waffen-SS in the Second World War. In WW2 Finland was attacked by the USSR during the 1939-1940 Winter War. Because of this conflict Finnish anti-Russian and anti-Soviet attitudes deepened. Around 1,400 Finnish men served as volunteers in the Waffen-SS during World War II. The men of the Finnish Waffen-SS served in the Wiking Division in the Finnish Volunteer Battalion. History Hustle presents: Finnish Waffen-SS Volunteers. In Finland during WWII, German soldiers fathered many children with local women. After the war, the mothers were frequently ostracized and their children demonized as bastards. Only recently have mothers and children started to break their silence. For more from Focus on Europe go to 🤍

Did Finland in World War II want to create Greater Finland (Finnish: Suur-Suomi)? Did Finland want to enlarge its territory during the Continuation War (Finnish: Jatkosota)? Or did Finland only want to recover its lost territories after the Winter War (Finnish: Talvisota)? It's not easy to answer this question. When thinking about World War II, it's really easy to focus solely on the fighting in the Atlantic or Pacific theaters. But there were other theaters of war that were just as harsh, and the Finnish warriors of the Winter War prove it. When faced with an overwhelming invasion from the Soviet Union, the Finns stayed and fought to defend their homeland with little more than grit and determination on their side. The Winter War lasted less than a year but resulted in more horrors than other entire regions saw during the duration of WWII. The Finns stopped at nothing to beat their enemies. #FinnishArmy #wwii #weirdhistory

Finland's Story in World War 2
Technically, Finland never joined the Axis. Yet, the Finns fought alongside the Axis against the Soviet Union from 1941-1944. Although some might see Germany and Finland as “natural” allies this was far less the case than some might suspect. There were various issues like politics, ideology and the recent Winter War where there some issues or strong disagreement, of course there was also some common ground. Finland was one of the few nations north of Germany that was not subdued by the Nazis. On the other hand, and despite the harshness of the confrontations, it was not dominated by the Soviet Union either. It is amazing that such a small country, with less than 4 million inhabitants and scarce resources, managed to successfully resist against the Third Reich and the communist forces.
Towards the end of World War Two, Finland, like many other Axis nations or their co-belligerents, fought against the German Wehrmacht. In the case of the Lapland War, neither side truly wanted the fight, leading to one of the lowest casualty conflicts of the war. This topic was suggested to me by user Bob Semple Tank. Thank you! If you enjoyed this video, please like and subscribe! Instagram: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Script: Towards the end of WWII, many Axis aligned nations switched sides and fought against the Germans. After the Soviet victory in the Continuation War, Finland turned against its former co-belligerent and fought against German forces. In August of 1944, Finland had negotiated a separate peace with the Soviet Union and changed leadership. The terms of peace included the forced removal of all German troops in Finland by mid September. President Mannerheim estimated it would take the Germans about 3 months to fully evacuate, so he knew this would be a nearly impossible task. Immediately after the announcement of the Moscow Armistice, German troops began Operation Birke (the evacuation of scandinavia). Both sides wished to avoid conflict, as they had both already faced severe losses. Soon enough, the Soviets became restless with the lack of force the Finns were showing. On September 28th, the Finns first went to battle against the Wehrmacht. On September 29th, Finnish troops were commanded to take the bridge across the Olhava river intact. When the Finns attempted to disarm bombs planted on the bridge, the Germans detonated them, killing the Finnish commander. At the Battle of Tornio, Finnish troops successfully forced a German retreat in the first major engagement. In October, the German retreat strategy shifted to a scorched earth policy, especially in northern Finland. Albert Speer determined that German nickel stockpiles were sufficient, allowing further retreat as the Nazis no longer needed to hold the valuable nickel mines in Petsamo. Despite previous losses and retreating, the Nazis still had the upper hand. This changed when they had a disastrous retreat near Rovaniemi. One battalion was cut off from the rest, allowing Finnish troops to surround them. Furthermore, fires started by the Germans to destroy Finnish government buildings spread so far that they detonated a train carrying a large portion of the German ammunition. By November, the war was basically over, although a treaty would not be signed until the following April. On April 27th, 1945, the Finnish flag was raised over the three-country cairn between Finland, Norway, and Sweden in a manor comparable to the raising of the American flag at Iwo-Jima or the raising of the Soviet flag over the Reichstag. The flag raising marked the end of World War Two for Finland. The Lapland War, although a Finnish victory, marked the start of a darker time for Finland. For the next 50 years, Finland would live in the shadow of its super-power neighbour, the Soviet Union. Neither Finland nor Germany really wanted to fight, but both were forced to by the Soviets. The Soviet dominance over Finland, now widely referred to as Finlandization, was less a result of Finland being weak and more because of the fear of their powerful Soviet neighbours.

Germany could return to authoritarianism if the economic conditions were to seriously worsen in the country, the son of Hans Frank the governor general of Nazi occupied Poland during World War Two, has told BBC Hardtalk. "As long as our economy is great, and as long as we make money everything is very democratic," said Niklas Frank, but "if we have five to 10 years heavy economic problems the swamp is a lake, and is a sea and will swallow again, everything," he added. Niklas Frank said he "despises" his father for the crimes he committed while he was governor-general of Poland from 1939 to 1945, and tours Germany giving speeches about his father and the legacy of the Nazi era. Hans Frank was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg trials and executed in 1946. Please subscribe HERE 🤍 World In Pictures 🤍 Big Hitters 🤍 Just Good News 🤍

(16 Aug 1997) Natural Sound About 120 neo-Nazis from across Northern Europe demonstrated in Denmark to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of the Nazi Rudolph Hess. Police and angry townspeople, including were out in force at the rally where scuffles broke out but no-one was injured. Neo-Nazis from Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden as well as a handful from Germany marched down the streets of Koege about 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Copenhagen. Small scuffles broke out throughout the demonstration and at least one person was arrested for assaulting a photographer, The marchers were commemorating the 10th anniversary of Hess's death. For 20 years, Hess, Adolf Hitler's deputy, was the lone inmate at Spandau prison, where he was sent on conviction of war crimes at the Nuremberg trials. Officials say he committed suicide on August 17th 1987 but Neo-Nazis believe he was murdered, and he has become a cult figure to the movement. After the assembly at the square, the neo-Nazis were marched under tight guard by police in riot gear to the Koege railway station. As the demonstrators began boarding a train, angry observers threw a few bottles at them. The neo-Nazis retaliated with a hail of dozens of bottles and police moved in to shove the demonstrators aboard the train. They headed for Greve, where the Danish neo-Nazi movement has its headquarters. Leftists and young immigrants throwing bottles and cobblestones tried to charge the headquarters in Greve, but were turned back by police firing tear gas. Police say there were 50 arrests at Greve and the town of Roskilde. In 1995 Roskilde erupted into violence at the 1995 neo-Nazi commemorations of Hess's death. The Finns have been fighting the Soviet Union since the Winter War. But now, Marshal Mannerheim and Prime Minister Risto Ryti look like they might pull out of the Eastern Front commitments they agreed upon with their Axis allies. German-Finnish relations seem to be at breaking point, and Red Army troops are threatening the borders. How long will Finland stay in this war? Across Sweden, young Viking enthusiasts have been angered by the actions of some far-right organisations who have adopted Viking iconography to represent white supremacist propaganda. One, in particular, is the Nordic Resistance Movement, known as the NRM. Viking enthusiast Robin Lundin is the co-founder of an association called Vikingar Mot Rasism (Vikings Against Racism, or VAR). The group was formed on Facebook to combat the conflation of Viking enthusiasm with neo-nazism, and it has more than 1,500 members. The NRM hold a rally in Robin's hometown of Kungalv. He uses the rally as a chance to challenge one of the NRM's leaders face-to-face about their misappropriation of Viking symbols. NRM's rallies frequently become violent, but Robin remains undeterred in his bid to expose the NRM’s ignorance and reclaim his Viking identity, without being branded a neo-Nazi. - Subscribe to our channel: 🤍 - Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 - Find us on Facebook: 🤍 - Check our website: 🤍

The Lapland War was the final war Finland ever had, after The Winter War and The Continuation War. While these wars before The Lapland War were primarily against The Soviet Union, this time it’s different. This time, it was a war against Germany, which may be confusing given that Germany and Finland were allied previously. In this video I will talk about the things leading up to the war, and the war itself. Enjoy the video!
