Stephanie and Joel share their 14-year journey of building a home from reclaimed materials, living off-grid with solar power, and growing a lot of their own food, from fruits and veggies to milk, meat, and honey. They built their home on shared land using materials they salvaged from the dump, wood from a building they took apart themselves, and whatever free stuff they could get their hands on. They had no electricity in the beginning so they only had candles. Eventually, they got a solar panel and a battery to run lights, and the systems have evolved from there. They now have a wood cookstove for heat and cooking in the winter, 5 solar panels and 4 lithium batteries for electricity (plus a generator to supplement on cloudy days), a washing machine, a propane fridge and stove for summertime cooking, and a thermostat controlled propane stove so they don't have to get up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire. For water they have a quarry on the land which they draw from to fill a reservoir in their loft. From there, the water is gravity fed into the kitchen and bathroom. Their drinking water comes from a well on the property. The toilet is an Airhead urine diverting toilet. The cabin has a master bedroom in the loft and a main-floor bedroom that's split into two sleeping spaces for their kids. They have an open-concept kitchen, dining and living room area, and the bathroom is closed in with a beautiful bottle wall. There's also a sunroom they recently added to the front of the house to bring in natural light, passive solar heating, and to grow food in the winter (with the help of LED grow lights). For work, Joel owns a tree service business, and Stephanie runs an off-grid Airbnb business. For over 598 days, we've been living without a reliable power source in our cabin in the woods. We constantly run out of power, and we wish we could show you what that looks like, but it's just dark! Think about all of the things you use electricity for every day. Pretty tough to go without, right?! Well it's something we've learned not to take for granted, because it's been so hard to come by... UNTIL NOW! We're installing a 48 volt electrical system with over 10,000 watts of solar power and 28 kWh of battery storage to harvest the sun's energy! This has been our most complex project to date. While this isn't our first time dabbling in electricity (if you recall the first three letters of our channel, we built our vanincluding all the electricourselves from top to bottom), but it is one of our most ambitious! After a lot of hard work, mistakes, sweat and tears, it all comes down to the moment of truth: will our power work?! The answer, all comes down to a flick of the switch! Special thanks to Battleborn Batteries for all their incredible help with everything. We couldn't have done it without you! What do you think of our power system?! Cabin life is not easy but to me the variety of tasks required to develop and maintain a successful wilderness homestead are very interesting and rewarding. During the last few days of winter, completing the interior of my log cabin is high priority before I turn my attention to the outdoor kitchen build in the coming days. Between construction projects, I pull a couple of venison hams out of the freezer and cut them into thin strips and dry/smoke them on the fire. With days reaching above freezing temperatures, my daughter Emily and sister help tap maple trees and prepare the evaporator for making maple syrup. Now that warmer weather is here, I shave my head and beard. My wife returns from a hiking trip to Europe with Emily and visits the cabin, seeing the kitchen and bookcase wall additions for the first time. If you're a fan of shipping container homes, then this is a video tour you won't want to miss! In this weeks episode we meet Rosie, who has constructed an incredible off-the-grid home out of five 20ft shipping containers. Rosie's home is situated in the middle of a spectacular conservation block and her beautiful modern shipping container home has been wonderfully designed to take full advantage of the beautiful surrounding landscape. Best of all, this home is completely off the grid, with solar power, rainwater collection and even a vermi-composting toilet, meaning she will never need to see another power or water bill again. Canadian Castaway has been living off-grid in his self-built cabin for 6 years now, and we sat down with him to find out what it's like day-to-day, how much it cost him to build and live off the grid, and what he's changed over the years to make his alternative lifestyle more comfortable and functional. You can follow Canadian Castaway on YouTube and Instagram here: 🤍 🤍 He also has plans of his cabin for sale here: 🤍 Canadian Castaway lives in an 18' x 22' cabin with his girlfriend and his cat. It has a kitchen, living room, and bathroom on the main floor, and a movie-watching space, a home office, and a bedroom in a couple of lofts above. His electricity is from two solar arrays that are set up in different spots on his land to maximize sun exposure, and the panels charge a pair of lithium batteries. He also has a generator for backup electricity, which he runs for about an hour a day during grey winter days to top up his batteries. His heat comes from a wood stove and his hot water and cooktop run on propane, although he has installed an electric water heater for use on sunny days (when there's extra solar power) so that he can reduce the amount of propane he uses. He collects rainwater from the roof of the small house, and stores it in a 6,000-liter cistern in a shed. During summer months when there is plenty of rain, the tank is always full. During the winter, he goes for about 5 months without rain, so he has to ration the water (about 1000 liters per month). The tap water is filtered through a nylon filter to remove sediment, and the drinking water goes through a UV lamp filtration system. He initially bought the land and built the cabin for approx. $64,000 CAD but that was done by taking a risk and building without a building permit. The building inspector has since required some upgrades that significantly increased the cost of the project, including putting in a road, putting in an engineered septic system, increasing the size of his cabin's footprint to meet the minimum building code size, etc. He initially wanted to build and live off-grid because it seemed cheaper, and with the cost of land being so low, the entire project cost less than what an empty lot costs now. But he does say that while he enjoys the feeling of being self-sufficient, it's also very limiting because you can't leave the home unattended. He might eventually plug into the grid if the power lines get closer to the point where it would be affordable to do so. Charlie built this beautiful off-grid float home in a remote channel on the west coast and has been living on it full-time for the past 25 years. His wife, Ellen, is a newbie to the lifestyle and joined him there 6 years ago. Together they have lived a quiet life in tune with the weather and the seasons. In this video, we get a peek at their beautiful home and some insight into the systems, the work, and the challenges that come with living this way. The couple relies on solar power for electricity (supplementing with a generator on grey days), they have a wood stove for heat, propane for cooking and laundry, and a composting toilet for their waste. There is a floating greenhouse and some raised garden beds on the deck that provide approx. 50% of their fresh vegetables in the summer. The rest of their food is bought at the grocery store in bulk so that they can stay out for 6 weeks or longer at a time. Their home is quite remote and it's water access only, so have a couple of open boats, and one enclosed boat for travelling in rough or cold weather. The couple says they sometimes have to wait more than a week for a weather window to make a safe trip away from the cabin. In this video, we get a peek at their beautiful home and some insight into the systems, the work, and the challenges involved in living this way. "Charlie and Ellen acknowledge and express our gratitude to all those people and businesses who are on the grid and provide supplies and services that help us maintain our ability to live out where we do, off-grid and in the wilderness. We are so fortunate to be where we are and we know we couldn’t do it without their support.” A very special thank you to Charlie and Ellen for sharing their story with us, and to Lukáš for making the trip all the way out there to film them. Bryce and Misty have spent the last 12 years building a cob home, homesteading, living off the grid, and homeschooling their two daughters. They live without a car, so for transportation, they use taxis and bicycles, and they eventually hope to have a cart that their two horses can pull. For food production, they have a permaculture food forest for fruits and vegetables, chinampa-inspired wetland gardens, a cow and a bull for milk, ducks and chickens for eggs, bees for honey, and they also forage and cultivate feral crops. You can find out more about Bryce and Misty here: YouTube: 🤍 Blog: 🤍 Email: ontariopermaculture🤍hotmail.com And SUPPORT BRYCE AND MISTY here: 🤍 🤍 These two have put in an impressive amount of work setting up their homestead. The house is built with clay that they collected from the wetland area of their property, their well was dug by hand, and everything from the fences to the staircase was made with wood from within a 20km radius of their home. The cost to build the house was approximately $1,000 CAD. Most of the building materials (the sand, clay, straw, and wood) came from the land, and things like roofing, lumber, and windows they sourced from secondhand and reclaimed sources. Interestingly, they used several different natural building techniques in the home with each new addition. They usually start with a timber frame, and they have used cob, straw bales and wattle and daub, to fill in the spaces between the beams. And they've also explored using green roofs and earth floors. Since moving to the land, they had two lovely daughters that they homeschool using unschooling and life immersion methods. They learn about food production, natural building, nature, math, reading, and more! To earn an income, they do a variety of odd jobs including catering, seasonal farm work, a roadside plant stand, and they also receive the childcare benefit that all families in their province receive. Their primary focus is not how to earn more money but rather how to spend less and have more time. They try to produce as much of what they need on the farm. For electricity, they have solar panels on the roof and a wind turbine (currently non-operational), for water they have a hand-dug well and rainwater collection barrels, for heat they have wood stoves, they have two composting toilets, and a rocket stove to heat water for their bathtub. According to Google, it's living without the reliance of one or more public utilities. But the truth is much harder than that, and we discuss the biggest obstacle (and a totally unexpected one) at the end of this video. It's truly one of those things you can't fully appreciate until you've been there, but we're doing our best to share our knowledge and experience with you! And speaking of, this week we dealt with the reality of solar panels in the snowlots of scraping! Not just our panels, but our walkway with our snow plow, which had a flat tire. Shadow built this incredible floating island with salvaged and reclaimed materials. The island comprises a 2-story float home, a floating chicken coop, floating gardens, and even a floating compost shed! He's been living on the water for 17 years and working hard to protect the Widgeon Slough area in BC, Canada. He gathers wood from the river to use as firewood, he grows some of his own fresh food in barrel gardens, and he collects fresh water from a nearby spring. He filters his greywater on a floating raft with multiple plant and husk filtration layers, and he composts his food and human waste to ensure that nothing goes overboard. You can follow Shadow on Instagram and YouTube here: 🤍 🤍 Each part of the island is floating independently with its own off-grid solar panel to provide electricity. This way, if the island breaks apart during a storm, the power system won't be damaged. Shadow uses a skiff to collect wood from the river and to get around his island. For longer journeys into town, he uses his kayak to get to the road, and from there, he uses a bicycle to get to town for supplies. He also has friends and family who help him with obtaining supplies. Shadow says the main threats to the area are poachers, pollution, film crews, and the local government spraying pesticides to control invasive species and opening the area to be a park. The government has been trying to evict him for years, but he feels that his presence is needed to keep people accountable for the harm they're inflicting on this delicate ecosystem. Escape the Grid: Best States for Off-Grid Living So, ya wanna live off the grid? You have grown tired of being suffocated by the rat race and want to make your own way and live more deliberately. Why not, it worked for Henry David Thoreau. There are several ways you can live off the grid. Van life, off-grid tiny homes, cabins, you can even live out of a rucksack or backpack. However you do it, it is becoming more popular. Gen-Xers down were always told to go to school, get a job, buy a house, start a family, and start getting ready to die. Younger generations and some of the older generations aren’t down with that. They are blazing their own trails. One of those trails ends up living off the grid. If you are one of those people that are thinking about this, today I am going to list the best states to live off the grid. Mark and Chera rescued and renovated an old cabin and transformed it into an epic off-grid home for their family of 5. The catch? There's no road to get there, so they had to figure out how to do absolutely everything by boat and barge: transporting building materials, equipment, belongings, workers, as well as commuting to and from town for school and work. They were limited in how much they could modify the existing cabin, so to make space for the kids' bedrooms, they attached a yurt to the house with a mudroom. For heat, they have a wood stove in the house, a pellet stove in the yurt (to keep a constant temperature for the kids), and backup wall-mount propane heaters for really cold days, or times when they're away from the house during winter (to prevent pipes from freezing). Since propane has to be delivered on a barge, it's really expensive so they try to limit their propane use as much as possible. For electricity, they have 3 systems. First, a solar power system with 18 panels and a large battery bank which works great in the summer even though they're surrounded by mountains. But during the colder, rainier months, the system doesn't keep everything running so they installed a hydro turbine which creates electricity using water pressure from a creek up the hill, and this provides 24 hour electricity for most of the year. As a backup to these two systems, they have a propane generator but they try not to use it unless they need to. The kids still attend school in town, and Mark and Chera have flexible jobs so they can work in town or from home as needed. They have 2 enclosed boats with GPS and heat for the 20 minute commute back and forth to town. We loved getting the chance to spend a whole day and night with this lovely family and seeing how they've made off-grid living comfortable and fun for everyone! Thanks for watching! Off Grid videos should be transparent, so people who want to live off-grid can have clear examples and accurate expectations. Also for a lot of people off grid living is a way to get a foothold in life and have an affordable home, not just a way to "unplug" from the grid. If you haven't seen my previous video click here 🤍

Pat Bowcock explains how she left her 9-5 lifestyle to live in tune with the land, creating her own five acre permaculture smallholding, that is her home, her work and her life. Pat's smallholding, Ourganics Evolving Systems, features a large polytunnel, a flood garden and a forest garden, all of which she harvests and sells to the local community. The local spring is used to water the crops which then joins the River Bride and a small caravan and yurt offer a place to stay, providing extra income. Ourganics Evolving Systems is a real example of how off-grid living is a labour of love where work and play are interchangeable and a job doesn't mean paying rent, but living a richer life.
